Member Handbook:
Membership and Dues

ELIGIBILITY

Those with an interest in increasing their enjoyment and knowledge of the hobby of raising, breeding, or exhibiting tropical fish, aquatic plants, and other forms of aquatic life are eligible for membership in the Greater Pittsburgh Aquarium Society, Inc. This includes both individual hobbyists as well as dealers.

DUES

GPASI membership dues are currently twenty dollars per year per mailing address. Each membership entitles a household to receive a single copy of GPASI’s Finformation, and other publications, as they are produced. Household members may participate individually in our Breeders' Award and Aquatic Horticultural Award Programs. Each paid membership is entitled to one vote.

Two or more individuals desiring to maintain independent memberships at a single mailing address shall each be charged dues of twenty dollars.

MEMBERSHIP TERM

New Membership
Hobbyists who have not been GPASI members during the preceding twelve months shall be offered regular membership in our Society beginning with the payment of dues and terminating December 31st of the year in which these dues are paid.

Renewal Memberships
Renewal of regular membership in our Society shall be offered to anyone who has been a GPASI member at any time during the preceding twelve months. Renewals will be offered in increments of one year beginning January 1st and terminating December 31st.

Speakers
Regular members who act as speakers at a general meeting shall be granted a twelve-month renewal of their regular membership.

PRO-RATED DUES FOR NEW MEMBERS

New Members joining our Society between January 1st and June 30th will be charged the full amount of the dues. Members joining our Society July 1st through December 31st will be charged pro-rated dues. Pro-rated dues will be set annually by the Board of Directors.

DELINQUENT RENEWALS

Memberships renewals are due before or at the January meeting. A roster of paid members will be published in the February meeting notice. Anyone who has not paid will be dropped from the membership/mailing list until dues are paid. If there are any questions on payment of dues, contact the membership secretary.

GUESTS

We welcome guests to all our general meetings, however we reserve the right to limit an individual to attending no more than two meetings without joining our Society. This is only fair as the current members are incurring considerable expense to provide our program and activities.

SPECIAL MEMBERSHIPS

Speakers
Special membership in our Society shall be granted to each speaker at our general meetings who is not a regular member of GPASI at the time of his or her presentation. This special membership shall commence with the date of the speaker’s appearance and terminate twelve months later. No dues shall be levied for this special membership. Speakers who hold a special membership at the time of their presentation shall be granted a twelve-month extension. At the termination of speaker’s special membership, a renewal shall be offered following the procedures outlined for new, regular members.

Grand Master Breeder
Any member who achieves grand master breeder status in our Breeders Award Program (BAP) will be awarded lifetime membership in our society.

Grand Master Aquatic Horticulturalist
Any member who achieves grand master horticulturalist status in our Aquatic Horticultural Award Program (AHAP) will be awarded lifetime membership in our society.

GIFT MEMBERSHIPS

Gift memberships are available from the membership secretary.

MEMBERSHIP FORM AND ROSTER

To apply for new or renewal membership, please forward the membership form to the membership secretary. The completion of this form is mandatory and will enable us to accurately prepare a membership roster and mailing list. The membership form allows individuals to indicate their desire to be excluded on any published membership roster or mailing list.

NAME TAGS–MEMBERS AND GUESTS

Members and guests are requested to wear a name tag during all general meetings. These name tags are available as you enter the meeting from the membership committee. Each member’s name tag will show their name, membership number, and GPASI office, if any. Guest’s name tags, which will be of a different color, will show your name and guest number. These tags will facilitate conversations as well as aid in welcoming new members and guests. These tags will also be used as a means of identification during our auction and other programs.
